Iranian media reported, yesterday, Saturday, that an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck the northwest of the country near the border with Turkey, killing at least two people and injuring dozens.

A spokesman for the Iranian emergency services, Mojtaba Khalidi, said, "There are 122 injured so far in the city of Khoy.. Unfortunately, two people have been killed."

State media quoted local emergency officials as saying that rescue teams had been dispatched to the area and hospitals had been put on alert.

An official in the emergency services told state television that snow was falling in some of the quake-hit areas, amid freezing temperatures, as well as power outages in some areas.
