The dismissal of the head of the Conservative Party from the British government

Head of the Conservative Party, Nazim Al-Zahawi.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak sacked Conservative Party leader Nazim Al Zahawi from his post in government on Sunday after an independent inquiry into his tax affairs found him to have committed a serious breach of the ministerial code of conduct.

Sunak had ordered an independent consultant to investigate suspicions about the tax affairs of Zahawi, who briefly took over as finance minister during a period of political turmoil in Britain last year.

Al-Zahawi said British tax authorities had concluded he had been "careless" in his advertisements but had not intended to make a mistake or pay less tax.

Sunak said in a letter to Al-Zahawi, "After completing the investigation of the independent consultant who informed me and you of its results, it is clear that a serious breach of the ministerial code of conduct has occurred."

"Accordingly, I inform you of my decision to remove you from your position in the British government," he added.

Special Counsel Lori Magnus found that Al-Zahawi provided misinformation when he said reports about his tax affairs dating back to July were "smearing".
