The Pope of the Vatican, Pope Francis, called on Israel and the Palestinians to stop what he described as a “vortex of death” and to engage in dialogue in pursuit of peace, and denounced the violence in the region.

The Pope said in statements yesterday that he was deeply saddened by the killing of Palestinians during Israeli operations, and the killing of Jews in a shooting at a synagogue on the outskirts of Jerusalem.

And he continued, "With great pain, I receive the news from the Holy Land ... the spiral of death increases every day, and it only serves to eliminate the meager trust that exists between these two peoples."

He added, "I appeal to the two governments and the international community, and ask them to find other ways that include dialogue and the sincere search for peace immediately and without wasting any time."

Yesterday, Israeli settlement guards killed a Palestinian near the Kedumim settlement near the city of Qalqilya in the West Bank, and the Israeli army said that the dead man was “armed with a pistol.”

Tens of thousands of Israelis demonstrated, yesterday evening, against the right-wing government headed by Netanyahu, in Tel Aviv and other cities, for the fourth consecutive week, and some demonstrators lit candles in memory of the victims of violence.

Netanyahu pledged, yesterday evening, a strong, rapid and accurate response to the attack that targeted the Jewish synagogue, and the Israeli army sent more forces to the West Bank, and the attack came after an Israeli raid in the city of Jenin in the West Bank, killing 10 Palestinians.

In addition, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken arrived in Cairo yesterday, at the beginning of a visit to the Middle East amid the great escalation between the Israelis and the Palestinians, seeking to use the influence of the United States to try to reduce tension.

At least 200 Palestinians and 26 Israelis were killed in 2022, according to Agence France-Presse figures, in the most violent year between the two sides in years.
