In Mali, the Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA) is withdrawing from the commission responsible for drafting the country's new Constitution - supposed to mark the end of the transition period.

The Tuareg-dominated alliance in the North announced it in a press release dated January 27 and it is a new sign of the discord between the CMA and the central government.

Armed groups in Azawad complain of  the Bamako authorities' "

persistent lack of will

" in implementing the peace agreement concluded in 2015. At the end of last year, the CMA withdrew from the mechanisms for monitoring the text, after calling

for a bilateral meeting on neutral ground

with government representatives.

This departure of the CMA from the commission in charge of drafting the new Malian Constitution is therefore an opportunity for the movements of Azawad to reiterate their criticisms: they denounce an "

obvious degradation

 " and "

a clear decline in interest

" of the part of the government vis-à-vis the reconciliation process.

It is also a reply after the last words of the head of Malian diplomacy.

Friday, January 27, at the podium of the United Nations, Abdoulaye Diop had found "

regrettable

" that the CMA suspends its participation in the monitoring of the peace agreement.
