In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation affirmed that the UAE expresses its strong condemnation of these criminal acts, and its permanent rejection of all forms of violence and terrorism aimed at undermining security and stability, and contrary to moral and human values and principles.

The Ministry also expressed its sincere condolences and sympathy to the government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and its friendly people, and to the families of the victims of this heinous crime, and its wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured.

Yesterday, the Iranian authorities arrested an Iranian who attacked the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran, killed an employee, and wounded two security personnel, in an operation that Baku considered a "terrorist attack", and subsequently began evacuating its diplomatic mission, while Iran confirmed that the man's motives were "personal".

And the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, in a statement yesterday morning, that “a man armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle killed the head of the guard of the diplomatic mission” in Tehran, and wounded two guards.

"The person who attacked the Azerbaijani embassy with a firearm on Friday morning has been arrested," the chief of police in Tehran, General Hossein Rahimi, told the Iranian "Tasnim" news agency.

He explained to television that the man was "an Iranian married to an Azerbaijani woman," noting that his motives were "personal and family."

He added, "He claims that his wife has been detained at the embassy for nine months."

He did not provide additional details, indicating that he entered the embassy "with his two children."

A spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Nasser Kanaani, confirmed that Tehran strongly condemns "the armed attack ... which unfortunately led to the death of a person."

"The results of the preliminary investigations of the relevant authorities and institutions indicate personal motives behind this attack," he added.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and Interior Minister Ahmed Vahidi also condemned the attack, according to a statement issued by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

"The necessary security measures have been taken for the continuation of the normal activities of the embassy and the diplomats of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Tehran," the two ministers said.

However, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev considered the attack "terrorist".

"We demand a speedy investigation and punishment for the terrorists," he said on Twitter.

Baku, according to its Foreign Ministry spokesman, Aikhan Hajizadeh, held Iran "fully responsible for the attack" and accused it of security negligence.

And the spokesman considered, in an interview with local media, that the recent anti-Azerbaijani campaign in the Iranian media "encouraged the attack."

He later told the Turkish TV channel TRT Haber that the embassy staff "are being evacuated from Iran."

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan indicated that the two injured guards were in a “satisfactory” condition, and that it had opened an investigation.

In a strongly worded statement, the ministry accused Iran of ignoring Baku's calls to enhance security at its embassy in Tehran for a long time.

"Unfortunately, this bloody terrorist act shows the disastrous consequences of not paying due attention to our persistent appeals in this regard," she added.

In pictures apparently taken by the cameras of the Azerbaijani embassy, and widely spread on social networks, a man appears getting out of his car in front of the embassy, after he collided with a car that was parked in the place, then entered the building with a weapon in his hand.

No children appear in this footage.

Other footage shows a man with a Kalashnikov rifle attacking others, then a body on the ground covered with a sheet.

The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed its "shock" over the attack.
