The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, has confirmed that the plans to

send Spanish Leopard battle tanks include preparing

some of the 53 armored vehicles that remain hibernated at the Casetas Logistics Base.

"We have already contacted the industry because there is a series of 2A4 'Leopard' in Zaragoza that

have been out of use for a long time

and we are going to see which ones could be put into operation to plan that delivery," the minister detailed on Thursday.

Although the person in charge of Defense has not anticipated what number could be adapted, she has explained that the allied countries have to

work in coordination

before making the shipments.

"It is not about simply saying that we are sending, but rather that the shipment has to be accompanied by personnel who know how to maintain it, sustain it and who know how to handle it, which is not easy," Robles insisted.

How much will they cost, where will they come from... The unknowns of the Spanish Leopard

This newspaper revealed last Tuesday that the Leopards that the minister had assured in August that they were in an "absolutely regrettable" state were viable if they were put on point.

Thus, the 53 cars stored in Zaragoza have been in hibernation since 2012.

Since that date they have been unencumbered and with some disassembled parts, precisely so that they would not be damaged.

The problem is that converting them into operational armor again

takes time and money

.

According to sources consulted by this newspaper, it would take about a month to carry out this operation.

While that is happening, the minister has revealed to the media that Spain has offered the necessary training

to train

those who drive the Leopard.

This instruction could be carried out in Latvia, where Spain is participating in Operation Reinforced Surveillance with six Leopards.

She also explained that this afternoon at half past seven the defense ministers of the allied countries will hold a first

contact by videoconference

to start organizing the shipment of the cars.

"SPAIN COMMITS TO PEACE"

As for the criticism of United We Can, Robles has stressed that Spain "is

firmly committed to peace

" and believes that the best way to do so is to participate in the coordinated shipment of "defensive material" to Ukraine to help its citizens, " that is being cruelly massacred" by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"We all want peace and that this illegitimate invasion by Putin that is causing a lot of damage stops. The important thing is

Spain's commitment to peace

, the sending of material has always been to work for peace and protect and defend the life of the Ukrainian citizens, who are being cruelly attacked by Putin," he insisted.
