Meta announced that in the coming weeks, it will restore the accounts of former US President Donald Trump on Facebook and Instagram, which it banned after the attack on the US Congress in 2021.

Meta said, in a statement, that it had concluded that the threat to public safety had decreased sufficiently and that it would reinstate Trump's accounts with new firewalls to prevent repeat offenses.

Going forward, the Republican leader's account could be suspended for up to two years for each violation of the platform's policies, said a statement from Meta's head of international affairs, Nick Clegg.

In response to the decision, Trump wrote on his "Truth" platform that Facebook has lost billions of dollars since it removed his accounts, adding that what happened with him should not happen with a president in office or with anyone else.

Facebook banned Trump on January 6, 2021, when a group of his supporters tried to prevent Joe Biden's inauguration as president by storming the Capitol building in Washington.

Trump's attorney, Scott Gast, sent a letter to Meta asking for a meeting to discuss Trump's "immediate return to the platform", which has 34 million followers, given that his status as a major contender for the Republican presidential nomination justifies ending the ban.

The new owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, also reactivated Trump's account on the platform last November, days after the former president announced his decision to run for the presidency, but he has not posted any tweets yet.
