The Burkinabè government is said to have demanded the departure of French troops deployed on its territory, Burkinabè television (RTB) reported on Saturday (January 21st), quoting the Burkina Information Agency (AIB).

A Burkinabè government spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A French government spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

A source close to the Burkinabè military government confirmed the information without providing further details.

RTB said the Burkinabè government on January 18 suspended a 2018 military agreement that allowed the presence of French soldiers in Burkina Faso.

Rise of anti-French sentiment

France would have one month to withdraw its troops from the country, RTB said, citing AIB.

This decision comes as anti-French sentiment has grown in recent months in Burkina Faso, a former French colony, and protests against France have multiplied there.

Hundreds of people descended on Friday in the center of Ouagadougou to protest against the French presence in the country.

About 400 members of French special forces are deployed in Burkina Faso to help local authorities fight a violent Islamist insurgency, which spread from neighboring Mali in 2015.
