On September 4, 2022, inmates at the institution in Umeå had the opportunity to vote early in the 2022 election. But a man at the institution was placed in seclusion that day and was not asked by the staff if he wanted to vote early.

Later on election day, he received information from staff that it was no longer possible to vote in the election.

The man made a JO report and the Probation Service's statement admits that the institution in Umeå broke down in its routines.

Forgot to inform

The Probation Service's investigation reveals how the staff at the institution went around the wards and asked the inmates if they wanted to vote in the election.

But that the staff forgot to inform the man and that it may be because he was placed in seclusion.

The Correctional Service further writes that they take very seriously the fact that an inmate was not given the opportunity to vote and that they must now begin work to produce guidance documents for handling future elections.
