Eyewitnesses reported to Al-Jazeera that the Eritrean forces began withdrawing from the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia, more than two months after the signing of the peace agreement between the Tigray Liberation Front and the federal government.

Witnesses said they witnessed the withdrawal of Eritrean forces from the city of Axum and Shire on Friday evening, and that huge military convoys bearing the Eritrean flag were seen heading towards the Eritrean border.

There was no comment from the Eritrean or Ethiopian government or the Tigray Liberation Front.

The newspaper "Tesfa News" - which is close to the Eritrean government - published pictures of military convoys of the Eritrean army, which it said had returned to the country after completing its mission, according to the newspaper.

This coincides with the disarmament of the Tigray Front forces and the deployment of the African Monitoring Mission and the Federal Army in different regions of the Tigray region.

Eritrean forces fought alongside the federal government forces in Ethiopia during the two-year civil war in Tigray.

At the end of last December, the Tigray Liberation Front began heavy weapons disarmament procedures, according to the peace agreement it signed with the Ethiopian government.

The peace agreement signed last November nd ends the two-year war between the Tigray Liberation Front and Ethiopian government forces.
