Democratic Republic of the Congo: to survive, the displaced exploit the Virunga Park

Since the end of October, tens of thousands of people have come to take refuge in makeshift camps in the Virunga National Park, at the foot of the Nyiragongo volcano, to flee the advance of the M23 rebellion in North Kivu and the clashes with the Congolese army.

Since the arrival of the displaced, park officials have noticed “worrying deforestation” linked to the illegal trade in charcoal (called “makala”).

In less than two months, more than 200 hectares of vegetation have disappeared.
