American rock singer David Crosby, who was in a rock band representing the 1960s and 70s, has died at the age of 81.

His family said he had been battling a long illness.

David Crosby was born in Los Angeles in 1941, according to Reuters.

He made his debut in 1964 as a member of the folk rock band "The Byrds", and then formed a band called "Crosby, Stills and Nash" with popular musicians, releasing hits one after another.

Both bands were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 and 1997.

Crosby's wife has sent a statement to the Los Angeles media saying, ``We are deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved David Crosby after a long illness.''
