In Senegal, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen touts 'different' approach

The US Treasury Secretary is visiting Senegal.

This is the first leg of Janet Yellen's tour of the continent, before Zambia and South Africa.

On Friday January 20, Janet Yellen notably met President Macky Sall and the Minister of Finance and Budget.

She also visited a business incubator, and touted a "win-win partnership" between the United States and the continent, while pointing the finger at Russia and China.

help the continent realize its enormous economic potential

."

While many African countries refrained from condemning Moscow's intervention in Ukraine, the US official directly blamed Russia

Russia's barbaric aggression against its neighbor is particularly felt by Africa and its peoples.

The war and Russia's use of food as a weapon has exacerbated food insecurity.

Janet Yellen also pointed to the practices of China, very influential on the continent, on the issue of over-indebtedness which is hampering investment.

We believe that the international community, including China, must provide significant debt relief to help countries get back on their feet.

The United States has a “

different

” and “

demanding

” approach according to the American official, who has emphasized transparency, good governance or environmental responsibility. 

Senegal is a major economic center in West Africa and an important partner to the US I spoke with Minister Bâ and Minister Sarr on ways to continue to work together to promote economic growth, weather a challenging financial environment, and protect the global financial system.
