• New Zealand The race to replace Jacinda Ardern begins while several politicians denounce that she suffered threats and harassment

Chris Hipkins, Minister of Education, will replace Jacinda Ardern as leader of the Labor Party and Prime Minister of New Zealand, after being the only proposed candidate for the position, the Labor Party said in a statement on Saturday.

Hipkins is expected to be confirmed as the new leader at a meeting of all 64 Labor lawmakers, or Caucus, on Sunday.

First elected as an MP for Labor in 2008, Hipkins, 44, became a household name at the forefront of the government's response to the pandemic after being appointed minister for Covid-19 in November 2020. Currently, Hipkins is Minister for Police, Education and Public Services and serves as Leader of the House.
