Two Lebanese deputies sit in the House of Representatives until the election of the President of the Republic

Lebanese MPs, Melhem Khalaf and Najat Aoun Saliba, announced today, Thursday, that they will remain in the parliament to demand that the sessions for the election of the President of the Republic not be closed and successive sessions open until the election of a President of the Republic.

Khalaf said of the parliament, after the end of the session to elect a president for the republic today: "We are staying inside the parliament to open a gap through the application of the constitution to say that it is not possible to close the sessions, but rather let us open successive sessions to produce a president of the republic."

He added, "In compliance with the constitutional articles and in order to push for the election of a president for the republic, in successive sessions without interruption, the decision was taken today not to leave the parliament hall and remain inside it, until this goal is achieved."

And he believed that "the articles of the constitution are clear, in terms of obligatory for the deputies to remain in a state of permanent unity, when the presidency becomes vacant, until the election of a president of the state."

Representative Saliba said, "People are unable to bear what we have reached, and all countries of the world have asked us for reforms in order to help us, and we do not do our work."

The term of former President Michel Aoun ended last October 31, and Lebanon entered the presidential vacancy stage.

The parliament was unable to elect a new president of the republic after 11 parliamentary sessions devoted to this matter.
