17 West Bank residents have been killed by the Israeli army since the beginning of the year.

The most recent incident occurred on Thursday night in Jenin.

Soldiers operated in the refugee camp in northern Palestinian territory in what the army said was an "anti-terrorist operation."

When the soldiers came under fire, they returned fire.

According to Palestinian sources, two people were killed.

Adham Jabarin, in his mid-twenties, was a member of the "Palestinian Islamic Jihad," the militant organization said.

The second person killed was Javad Bawaqneh, a 57-year-old teacher.

His son told Reuters that his father was shot in the chest while trying to give first aid to the wounded Jabarin outside his home.

The military said the incident was being investigated.

Several people were arrested in Jenin and other locations in the West Bank.

In the Israeli city of Netanya, the police arrested two Palestinians who were staying there illegally in the morning.

They are said to have been suspected of planning an attack.

A knife was reportedly found on one of them.

The trends of the past year, which was characterized by a sharp increase in Israeli military operations, are continuing in the new year.

Last but not least, they took place in the so-called A-area, for example in Jenin.

The Palestinian Authority is responsible for security there, but local militant groups do not recognize its authority.

These and other organizations, as well as individual perpetrators, carried out numerous attacks, primarily on occupation troops;

there have also been several terrorist attacks in Israel.

According to the United Nations, 16 Israeli civilians were killed by Palestinians in 2022, as well as five members of the security forces.

During the same period, 155 Palestinians were killed by Israelis in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and 32 in the Gaza Strip.

This is the highest number since 2004. Critics question the army's claim that the vast majority of those killed were involved in combat.

The conflict was also the subject of a meeting of the UN Security Council on Wednesday evening.

There, the representatives of Israel and the Palestinians accused each other of preventing peace with their actions.

The Israeli Gilad Erdan also accused the UN of manipulating its victim statistics.

2022 may have been "the deadliest year for Palestinian terrorists," Erdan said, "it was also the year with the most terrorist attacks on Israelis in a decade."
