The Iraqi News Agency said that a fan was killed and 60 others were injured today, Thursday, as a result of a stampede in the vicinity of the Trunk of Palm Stadium in Basra Governorate, southern Iraq, which is hosting today the final of the Gulf Cup between Iraq and the Sultanate of Oman.

The agency confirmed, quoting a medical source, that there are critical conditions among the injured.

The sports city in Basra is witnessing today the Iraqi national team's match against its Omani counterpart in the final of the 25th edition of the Gulf Cup.

The tournament started in Basra on January 6, with the participation of 8 teams: Iraq, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, UAE and Yemen.

For its part, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior appealed to fans not to go to the Trunk of the Palm stadium in Basra, except for card holders, to avoid stampede.

The Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad al-Sudani, arrived in Basra Governorate to hold an urgent meeting with a number of ministers and the governor of Basra.

Al-Sudani called on citizens in Basra to provide aid and support to support the concerned authorities in the Gulf Championship 25.

And on Monday, the Sultanate of Oman national team reached the final after defeating its Bahraini counterpart with a fatal goal, while the owner of the land, the Iraqi team, managed to beat the Qatari team with two goals to one.
