First Germany sent anti-aircraft artillery named Gepard, then combat vehicles Mård and now expectations are rising for the next piece in what sounds like the zoo of the German military - the Leopard 2 tank. It is considered by many to be the best and most effective tank in the world.

The Swedish Armed Forces' tank 122 is a modified variant of the Leopard.

During Friday, the defense ministers of the countries that assist Ukraine with weapons will meet at the American military base Ramstein in western Germany.

Ukraine and many NATO allies hope that Germany's newly appointed defense minister, Boris Pistorius, will then give the go-ahead for the Leopard tanks as well.

Poland's prime minister and Estonia's foreign minister are among those who have recently criticized Berlin's hesitation.

Several European countries have Leopards that they want to donate to Ukraine, but are waiting for permission from the manufacturer, Germany.

British decision opened the door to heavy offensive weapons

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has so far resisted the demands with reference to the fact that his country does not want to go ahead and alone break limits on how heavy weapons the Western countries send to Ukraine.

But with Britain announcing at the beginning of the week that it intends to send 14 tanks of the Challenger 2 model, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the German government, and above all the social democrats SPD, to claim that it would proceed alone.

According to a government source in Berlin that the news agency Reuters spoke to, the German government may consider supplying tanks if the United States also does so.

The American equivalent of Leopard is called Abrams and is powered by a gas turbine engine.

It is expensive and requires a lot of training.

The US has so far presented no plans to provide Ukraine with Abrams.

In Germany, there are now more people who support the proposal to send tanks to Ukraine than those who are against.

And in addition to the Christian Democratic opposition parties CDU and CSU, there is growing support in the governing parties liberal FDP and the Greens to follow the UK and open to the delivery of German Leopard.
