Since the 1990s, pension reforms have taken millions of French people to the streets.

From Jacques Chirac to Nicolas Sarkozy via François Hollande, many presidents have had to face the scold of the French.

1995: The Juppé plan

Under the presidency of Jacques Chirac, Prime Minister Alain Juppé presents a social security recovery plan including a reform of the pensions of state agents and public services.

A reform that generates protest.

Civil servants observe several weeks of strike.

Faced with massive mobilizations, Alain Juppé renounces measures on pensions.

2003: the Fillon reform

Then Minister of Social Affairs in the Raffarin government, François Fillon increases the contribution period to 40 years for civil servants.

The minister must come up against an outcry from the French.

On May 13, 2003, one to two million employees in the public and private sectors demonstrate throughout France.

2007: the reform of the special regimes

This is the first pension reform of Nicolas Sarkozy's five-year term.

As soon as he was elected President of the Republic, he wanted to reform the specific regimes of public service companies (EDF, GDF, SNCF, RATP, Banque de France, etc.) as well as professions with special status (clerks of notaries, elected officials and parliamentary employees ).

For these people, the contribution period increases to 40 years.

2010: the Woerth reform

Minister of Labor under Nicolas Sarkozy, Eric Woerth puts an end to the principle of retirement at 60 years old.

The legal retirement age has been raised by two years, gradually increasing to 62 years.

Very unpopular, this second reform generated massive demonstrations and blockages.

2014: the Touraine reform

Supported by the Minister of Social Affairs Marisol Touraine, under the presidency of François Hollande, this reform enshrines in time the principle of extending the contribution period to obtain a full pension.

This duration is increased by one quarter every three years from 2020 to 2035 to reach 172 quarters (43 years) for the 1973 and subsequent generations.
