Much needs to be done to restore, improve and protect Sweden's environment.

This is something that is clearly stated in the report, which is produced by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency every four years at the request of the government.

Sweden's 16 previously set environmental quality goals form the guidelines for how the government should work towards improving the quality of life for the country's inhabitants, animals and plant life from an environmental and climate perspective.

Just like last fall, when SVT Nyheter investigated how the process of meeting the goals is going, things don't look much brighter today.

Only one of all the goals has been fully met, and in some the development trend is even going backwards.

But now new proposals for improvements in environmental policy - which several authorities, including the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, have drawn up - have been sent to the government.

- There are quite a few proposals that deal with biological diversity, because we see that it is something that affects so many of the environmental goals, says Karin Hogstrand.
