An explosion inside a chemical factory in northeastern China has killed two people, injured 34 and left 12 missing, state media reported Monday.

The explosion occurred on Sunday inside a factory in Banshan County, Liaoning Province, and the authorities declared that "the fire is under control."

Pictures released by local government news releases showed flames and thick black smoke billowing from the factory.

The Banshan county government said - in a press release - that firefighting crews have brought the fire under control, and that the local environmental department is monitoring the impact on air quality in the area.

China (the second largest economy in the world) suffers from fatal industrial accidents frequently. Last November, 38 people were killed in a fire that broke out at a factory in the center of the country, and the fire was caused - according to the authorities - from the workers' misuse of equipment.

In March 2019, an explosion at a chemical plant in Yancheng - which is 260 kilometers from Shanghai - killed 78 people and destroyed homes kilometers away.

And in 2015, China witnessed one of the worst industrial accidents, when huge chemical explosions in the northern city of Tianjin killed at least 165 people.
