According to the health care authorities, the spread of infection has now peaked and the number of people applying to hospitals and so-called fever clinics with covid-19 has started to decrease.

Fewer and fewer patients are in need of intensive care and the number of people who test positive in connection with healthcare visits should also have decreased.

- This applies to both cities and rural areas, says spokesperson Jiao Yahui at a press conference according to Reuters.

A total of 59,938 people have died with covid-19 in Chinese hospitals.

Saturday's data has been released after widespread complaints that authorities had previously not published the statistics since the harsh restrictions were released in early December and the spread of infection took off.

Hospital cases only

The number includes 5,503 people who died due to respiratory problems directly caused by covid-19, doubling the official death toll to 10,775. 54,435 of the cases reported on Saturday have died from an underlying illness in combination with covid-19 .

The figures apply to deaths that occurred in hospital between 8 December and 12 January.

China's National Health Commission opens up that more people may have died in late homes.

The majority of international assessors, however, expect that the real number of covid-related deaths in China is significantly higher.
