Brazil's Supreme Court is investigating Bolsonaro's role in the riots

Brazil's Supreme Court has agreed to investigate the role of the country's right-wing former president, Jair Bolsonaro, in the storming of government offices in Brasilia by his supporters last week.

The court said in a statement late Friday that the decision follows a request from Brazil's public prosecutor's office.

Bolsonaro was accused of posting a video clip on the Internet on Tuesday in which he questioned the legitimacy of the Brazilian elections held last October, in which he lost to leftist candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Deputy Attorney General Carlos Frederico Santos said, according to a statement from the attorney general's office, that although Bolsonaro posted the video two days after Sunday's attacks and then deleted it shortly after, his alleged involvement in the riots must be investigated.

Thousands of rioters, who refuse to acknowledge Bolsonaro's defeat in the elections, stormed the Brazilian Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace.
