According to The Wall Street Journal, the Biden administration plans to seek congressional approval for a deal worth $20 billion, which includes, among other things, 40 F16 planes.

The deal is described, among other things, as a "carrot" and an "encouragement" to Turkey to approve the two countries' NATO application, sources told the newspaper.

May be announced next week

The sale of F16s to Turkey has been on the agenda for a long time, but has been repeatedly postponed.

The deal, which is now said to be being prepared, includes, in addition to the fighter jets, 900 fighter robots, 800 bombs and equipment for the F16 planes Turkey already has.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the US Congress has never before blocked an arms deal requested by the White House.

At the same time, several members of Congress have repeatedly opposed arms sales to Turkey on human rights grounds.

The deal is expected to be announced in connection with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu's visit to Washington next week.
