An independent special investigator is to investigate the discovery of various secret documents in the private rooms of US President Joe Biden from his time as Vice President.

This was announced by US Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday at a short-notice appearance in Washington.

It had previously become known that classified information was not only found in a former office of the American President, but also in another location.

The White House said a "small number" of documents were found in the garage at Biden's Wilmington residence.

The special adviser to the American President, Richard Sauber, did not say exactly what was involved.

It is working "fully" with the National Archives to ensure that all Obama-Biden administration records are properly in its possession.

After Biden's lawyers discovered classified information in a closet during the final liquidation of an office in Washington in November, other locations were also checked.

This review was completed on Wednesday evening, said special adviser Sauber.

In response to the first incident, Biden said he was "surprised" by the discovery of the documents and did not know what information they contained.

In November, the Department of Justice had appointed a special investigator for criminal investigations against Donald Trump – among other things, because of his handling of classified information.

In contrast to Biden, whose employees informed the National Archives immediately after the find, according to the White House, Trump refused to release all the sealed documents.

The FBI then searched his property in Florida in August 2022.

While Trump is dealing with thousands of documents, including a hundred with the highest level of confidentiality, Biden is said to have dealt with ten documents so far.
