CIA Director William Burns met with the head of the Libyan National Unity Government, Abdul Hamid al-Dabaiba, in the capital, Tripoli, today, Thursday.

The media office of the head of the unity government said - via Facebook - that Al-Dabaiba received Burns, along with the Chargé d'Affairs at the US Embassy and the accompanying delegation.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the unity government, Naglaa Al-Mangoush, and the head of the intelligence service, Hussein Al-Ayeb.

According to the statement of the media office, Burns stressed during the meeting, "the need to develop economic and security cooperation between the two countries, praising the state of stability and growth witnessed by Libya during the recent period."

The statement quoted Al-Dabaiba as saying that the goal is to stabilize Libya and support it internationally in order to reach elections.

Meanwhile, sources told Al-Jazeera that Burns is expected to meet retired Major General Khalifa Haftar at his headquarters in the eastern city of Benghazi.

The same sources expected that the American guest would discuss with both Dabaiba and Haftar joint relations and security files, such as the presence of the Russian Wagner Group forces in central and southern Libya.
