Andreas Hoffmann becomes the new managing director of Documenta and Museum Fridericianum GmbH.

This was announced by the supervisory board of the documenta.

Hoffmann will succeed Ferdinand von Saint André, who started work as interim director after the end of the scandal-ridden Documenta 15 on October 1, 2022.

He, in turn, was preceded by Alexander Fahrenholtz, who took over the business from mid-July to the end of September 2022 from Sabine Schormann, who had resigned from her position due to the anti-Semitism debate about works in the Documenta.

The culture manager Hoffmann, who was born in 1971 and has been managing director of the Bucerius Kunst Forum in Hamburg for 15 years, is scheduled to start work on May 1, 2023.

"The personnel decision for the new managing director also sets the course for the future of the documenta in Kassel," say Kassel's mayor Christian Geselle (SPD), chairman of the supervisory board of the documenta and his deputy on the supervisory board, the Hessian art minister Angela Dorn (Die Grünen). .

As a cultural institution of global importance, the documenta has to face questions of content and structural challenges.

It was said that an experienced culture manager had been recruited for this purpose.

Both thanked Saint André for his "passion and professionalism in dealing with the valuable cultural treasure of Kassel and our country".

Documenta 16 is scheduled to take place in Kassel from June 12 to September 19, 2027.

By then, according to the supervisory board, the agreement on standards in dealing with artistic freedom and its limits, in dealing with any group-specific form of misanthropy such as anti-Semitism, racism and antiziganism, but also the adjustment of organizational and committee structures and the determination of the framework conditions should be achieved , under which the artistic direction of documenta 16 assumes its curatorial responsibility, play a central role.
