“For fear of cancer.” The first American lady is undergoing surgery

The White House announced that US First Lady Jill Biden removed all cancerous tissue after she spent hours in a military hospital on Wednesday, for a one-day hospital stay.

"All of the cancerous tissue was successfully removed and the edges are clear of any remaining skin cancer cells," said Kevin O'Connor, the White House physician.

O'Connor added that no further action is expected.

The surgery was carried out after a small lesion above the first lady's right eye was recently discovered during a routine check-up for skin cancer.

The New York Times reported, earlier, that "it is not clear whether the lump poses a threat to the life of the first lady, but doctors often perform this surgery, either to remove skin cancer or remove tissue that can turn into cancerous cells."

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, fair-skinned people like Jill Biden are at risk of common types of skin cancer, especially cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.
