The Peruvian Public Prosecutor announced, the day before yesterday, that it had opened a preliminary investigation against the President of the Republic, Dina Polwarti, and a number of her government officials on charges of committing “genocide” after killing 40 people within a month, during the suppression of anti-government demonstrations by the security forces.

The Public Prosecutor said in a tweet on Twitter that the Public Prosecutor, Patricia Benavides, “decided to open a preliminary investigation” on charges of committing “genocide, a described murder, and causing serious injuries against President Dina Polwarti, the Prime Minister, Alberto Otarola, and the Minister of the Interior, Victor Rojas, and Defense Minister Jorge Chavez.

She added that the preliminary investigation also targets the former Prime Minister, Pedro Angulo, and the former Minister of the Interior, Cesar Cervantes, who assumed responsibilities in the Bolarte government between December 7 and 21.

During the first two weeks of Polwarti's assumption of power, 22 people were killed in the protests.

According to the Public Prosecution Office, the crimes that will be investigated “were committed during the demonstrations of December 2022 and January 2023 in the regions of Apurimac, La Libertad, Punon, Junin, Arequipa, and Ayacucho.”

At least 40 people were killed and more than 600 injured in the protests that followed the impeachment and imprisonment of left-wing President Pedro Castillo in Parliament on 7 December.

The demonstrators are calling for the resignation of President Polarte, who was Vice President Pedro Castillo, but Parliament appointed her in his place when he dismissed him in December in response to the socialist president's attempt to dissolve the country's legislative power.

The authorities partially acquiesced to the demands of the demonstrators, as they decided to bring the election date closer from 2026 to April 2024. And the Puno border region with Bolivia is the center of the protests in the country, as it has witnessed an open strike since January 4.
