The death of former Lebanese Parliament Speaker Hussein Al-Husseini, the "godfather" of the Taif Accord

The Lebanese politician Hussein Al-Husseini, the former Speaker of Parliament and the architect of the peace agreement that ended a civil war that took place between 1975 and 1990, died today, Wednesday, at the age of 86.

Al-Husseini was one of the most prominent constitutional figures in Lebanon, and he held the presidency of Parliament from 1984 until 1992, when his prophet was elected to fill this position, which Lebanese customs usually stipulate that a figure from the Shiite community should assume.

Al-Husayni helped found the Amal Movement in the 1970s alongside Musa al-Sadr.

Al-Husseini became the leader of the Amal movement when al-Sadr disappeared during a trip to Libya in 1978, and he never returned, but he resigned from the leadership of the movement in 1980 when the leadership moved to Nabih Berri, who has led the movement since then.

Al-Husseini was born in the town of Shamstar in the Bekaa Valley, and played a major role in the peace agreement held in the city of Taif, which was brokered in Saudi Arabia in 1989, where he worked alongside former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Because of his role, many called him the "Godfather of Taif".

The head of the Lebanese caretaker government, Najib Mikati, mourned Hussein Al-Husseini.

Mikati considered that "Lebanon has today lost an authentic national and constitutional stature, and in its absence a bright page in the history of ancient political and parliamentary work is being turned," according to a statement issued by Mikati's official website.

He added, "Al-Husseini's presence marked a milestone in the history of parliamentary work in Lebanon, and marked legislative work with basic steps over many years."

Al-Husseini passed away this morning, after a health problem that required his transfer to the hospital.

Al-Husseini entered the parliamentary assembly in 1972 as a deputy for Baalbek-Hermel, and he presided over the House of Representatives from 1984 to 1992.

Baalbek also represented Hermel in Parliament during the 1972, 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2005 elections, and submitted his resignation from Parliament in August 2008.
