Jair Bolsonaro is currently in the US state of Florida where he has been living in self-imposed exile since December 30, two days before Lula da Silva was sworn in as the new president.

In the United States, Sunday's attack on the stronghold of Brazilian democracy, when supporters of Jair Bolsonaro stormed Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court in the capital Brasília, has brought to mind the storming of the Capitol in 2021. And now political voices are being raised for Bolsonaro to be extradited to his homeland.

"Should be sent back to Brazil"

- The United States should not be a haven for this authoritarian leader who has inspired domestic terrorism in Brazil.

He should be sent back to Brazil, Democratic Congressman Joaquin Castro told CNN.

"We must stand in solidarity with Lula da Silva's democratically elected government.

The US must stop giving Bolsonaro protection in Florida," writes Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also a Democratic congresswoman, in a Twitter post.

The same tones are heard from Brazil.

Renan Calheiros, a senator in Brazil's federal senate, on Monday called on the country's top court to "immediately" make an extradition request to the United States for Bolsonaro, calling the former president's involvement in the storming "indisputable."

No extradition request

According to US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, the country has so far not received such a request.

- If and when we do, we will deal with it, he said on Monday according to The Financial Times.

He also said he expects President Joe Biden and Lula da Silva to talk shortly.

Bolsonaro on Monday condemned the storming and denies involvement in it.
