Former member of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Dr. Siddig Tower, questioned the possibility of the success of the final phase of the political talks between the Sudanese parties, and said that there are major problems obstructing the framework agreement and making it far from achieving the demands of the Sudanese revolution, which is looking for real civil authority.

He stressed, in his interview with the episode (1/10/2023) of the "Beyond the News" program, that the framework agreement - which the military component signed with the civil forces - did not name things by their names, and considered the "revolutionary component" a key party in drawing up the arrangements for the next stage. In addition, the framework agreement was concluded in isolation from the real forces of the revolution, and he said that addressing the political crisis created by a particular regime cannot be with the same tools that created it and with the involvement of those who carried out and supported the coup.

Sudan's political parties have begun talks to reach a final agreement on forming a civilian government and resolving other outstanding issues, more than a year after the military excluded the civilian component from the political process.

The talks deal with thorny issues that were not addressed in the framework agreement, such as dismantling the regime of former President Omar al-Bashir, transitional justice, security sector reform, a peace agreement signed in 2020, and tension in eastern Sudan.

The former director of military media, Major General Muhammad Ajeeb, went in the same direction as the former member of the Sovereignty Council, by talking about the challenges facing the framework agreement, which he said was within a common ground between the military component and the Alliance of Forces for Freedom and Change, the military council.

From the point of view of the Sudanese general, the military component responded to foreign pressures and did not respond to the requirements of the Sudanese people, and therefore he was forced to put his hand in the hands of those he was rejecting, abandoning his position and advancing a lot towards the shifting sands, he said.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, welcomed the launch of the final phase of the political talks between the Sudanese parties. Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, said that the international organization remains committed to supporting the political process and helping to achieve a final agreement in Sudan in the coming weeks.

The military institution is outside the scope of the political process

On the other hand, Kamal Ismail, head of the Sudanese Alliance Party and leader of the Forces for Freedom and Change Central Council, expressed his optimism about the success of the final stage of the political talks between the Sudanese parties, explaining that the framework agreement is a key to be followed by other steps, and it is an open agreement to include all political and civil forces. In order to get out of the crisis, restore democracy and freedoms, and move forward in removing all obstacles.

He added that the military institution came in certain circumstances, and according to the framework agreement, the armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces will be outside the scope of the political process.

The head of the Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, had pledged to remove the army from the political scene and the transitional period.

It is noteworthy that the military component signed on the fifth of last December a framework agreement with the civil forces, led by the Forces for the Declaration of Freedom and Change (the former ruling coalition) and other political forces (the original Democratic Unionist Party and the People’s Congress) and civil society organizations, in addition to armed movements affiliated with Under the banner of the "Revolutionary Front", to start a transitional period that will last for two years.
