His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, received, in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, at the Zabeel Palace in Dubai yesterday, the winners of the third round of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Award Maktoum International Water, which is supervised by the Emirates Water Foundation under the umbrella of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives Foundation, and there are 11 winners from eight countries.

His Highness congratulated the winners of the third round of the award, praising their role in addressing one of the most prominent challenges of the era, and their endeavor to achieve the objectives of the award towards encouraging research institutions, individuals and innovators from all over the world to develop sustainable and innovative solutions to address the problem of scarcity of clean water in the world, following the approach of the UAE. To contribute effectively to providing solutions to the challenges facing the world, through pioneering initiatives and projects that help less developed societies to face challenges and achieve sustainable development.

The award, with a total prize pool of $1 million, includes four main categories: the Innovative Projects Award, the Research and Development Innovation Award, the Young Innovations Award, and the Innovative Crisis Solutions Award.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the UAE Water Water Foundation, said that the award received submissions from 56 countries around the world, which confirms the role of the UAE as a stimulating platform for innovation, a destination for innovators, and an incubator for creativity and innovators from all over the world.

He added, “According to the United Nations, one out of every three people in the world does not have access to safe drinking water, and more than two billion people live in countries with insufficient water supplies, and water scarcity affects women and children more because they are mostly The main responsibility is to collect water, and women and girls spend long hours searching for water, and children in some countries walk several kilometers a day to get water, which includes difficulties, risks, and waste of effort and time, in addition to depriving them of access to quality education.

Hence, the UAE Water Water, which was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in 2015, to contribute to ending the global water crisis by developing solutions to water scarcity problems and providing safe drinking water to help communities suffering from water shortages and pollution.

The joint first place in the Innovative Projects Award in the category of large projects went to: Agua Para El Pueblo Company (Honduras), for a plant to remove turbidity from polluted surface water sources without relying on electricity, and the South Asian Environment Forum (India), for its Solar-powered water treatment and distribution machines and reverse osmosis technology, while the Alternative Indigenous Development Corporation (Philippines) won the third place in the same category for a hydraulic pump to pump water to high altitudes without using fuel or electricity.

As for the Innovative Projects Award - Small Projects category, first place was won by the University of Illinois (USA) in cooperation with the Safe Water & Aids Project (Kenya) for a water treatment project with a decentralized solar-powered ozone system, and it won second place. Easy Water for Every One (USA) for an innovative project that relies on modifying dialysis machines and using them to purify drinking water, wash hands and cook in remote villages. The third place went to Membrane Filters (India) for a project to construct An independent groundwater purification plant powered by solar energy.

And within the Innovation Award in Research and Development - Global Institutions category, the University of Malaya (Malaysia) won the first place for a system consisting of a smart membrane for water treatment without the use of any chemicals, and the second place was won by the “Sustainable Life Initiative India” (India), for its A water purification device without membranes, filters, or external energy. Third place: Maithari Aquatic, in collaboration with Jain University (India), for an innovative system that combines sustainable production of potable water with a perishable food preservation solution.

As for the Individual Innovations Award - Innovative Researcher, Professor Peng Wang (China) won for three technologies to produce clean drinking water at low cost to meet the needs of small and medium communities.

The award for innovative solutions to crises was won by Mascara (France) for a project to desalinate water using solar energy. The solar energy generator is in the form of a pre-equipped shipping container and can be installed in less than two hours.
