According to the Diario Correo portal, at least 17 people died in protests in Peru on Monday.

The center of the riots was the town of Juliaca on Lake Titicaca in the southern Peruvian province of Puno.

According to media reports, the demonstrators are said to have tried to occupy the international airport Inca Manco Capac, followed by serious clashes with the security forces.

There have been unrest and protests in Peru for weeks after the ousting of former left-wing President Pedro Castillo.

Castillo had tried to prevent a vote on a motion of no confidence by dissolving parliament and declaring a state of emergency.

As a result, politicians from both the government camp and the opposition accused him of attempting a coup.

Almost the entire cabinet resigned.

In addition, prosecutors accused Castillo, his family members and confidants of operating a corruption network.

Congress approved the motion of no confidence and subsequently appointed Vice President Dina Boluarte as the new President.

She called on all political sectors of the country to unite and cooperate.

There will be new elections next year.

The demonstrators are demanding Boluarte's resignation and immediate new elections.
