In the absence of four months for the regional and municipal elections, the Popular Party has begun to put together what will be its squad on its way to the polls.

This same week, the

popular

ones placed their number three at the national level,

Elías Bendodo

, as director of the 28-M campaigns.

And within that team there will also be

José Luis Martínez-Almeida

as a banner to try to maintain and recover mayoralties throughout the Spanish territory.

"He is the most important mayor in the country and he is from the Popular Party," argues a leader from Genoa to EL MUNDO.

But placing the councilor of the capital as a battering ram has a double purpose: using the figure of Madrid and its first mayor as an electoral claim in other municipalities of our country and

boosting a political figure damaged by his last year in office in the city

.

Various party sources, who acknowledge that the polls are "very tight" at the moment in the capital, affirm that Almeida is "recoverable" and that Alberto Núñez Feijóo has a good opinion of him.

In fact, a couple of weeks ago, the national president of the PP was with the mayor at an event in Mercamadrid.

And, within that strategy of Genoa, are

his presence at the Christmas dinner of the PP in Vitoria and the visit that Almeida made last Wednesday to Logroño

, accompanied by the party's general secretary, Cuca Gamarra, and by the candidate for the Mayor of the Riojan capital, Conrado Escobar.

In Genoa they detail that the cities to which Almeida will go have not yet been specified because they see the elections still far away, but they do confirm that there will be more presences of the mayor of Madrid.

A strategy that the party has also followed in the Community itself, where the councilor, with the same reason that they use at the national level,

has already been accompanying the candidates appointed by Isabel Díaz Ayuso in Arganda del Rey, Alcalá de Henares, San Sebastián de los Reyes, Alcobendas and Hoyo de Manzanares

in the absence of going to Getafe and Alcorcón in the coming weeks.

Because the Mayor's Office of Madrid has become one of the fundamental bastions of the PP and losing it would mean a disaster for the aspirations of the party and of Núñez Feijóo.

According to the vast majority of the surveys, the current mayor would continue in office but

would depend on Vox, Ciudadanos or even both,

as the one published by this newspaper showed, coinciding with Almudena Day in November.

However, in the Palacio de Cibeles, sources close to the councilor are convinced that the electoral result will yield "a broad majority" with which even, without being absolute, they can govern alone with external support.

A possibility that only seems feasible if the

popular

ones managed to overcome the sum of the left because, otherwise, the blocking of a large part of the measures in the Cibeles Plenary would be practically immediate.

In addition,

in this variable, it must be taken into account that Almeida's relationship with Vox and its spokesman, Javier Ortega Smith, is non-existent

at this time since they have not even sat down to negotiate the City Budget for 2023, forcing extend the current ones that they did not support either.

However, the movements in the PSOE have spurred Almeida, who in 2022 has spent his worst year as mayor with the case of the masks, the internal war of the PP, the erosion of his relationship with Isabel Díaz Ayuso and the problems of cleaning of the city, which still persist, with the consequent anger of its neighbors.

The presence of the Minister of Industry, Reyes Maroto, as a candidate of the Socialists for the City Council has not been well received within the spectrum of the left, but it has been welcomed by her political adversaries.

“It is the push we needed in the face of an election.

With a minister, also unknown and who does not live in Madrid, they allow us to enter the campaign with the management of the central government, "they explain in the mayor's environment.

"

If he faces a Sánchez minister, it will be a double pleasure to help him

," adds a leader from Genoa.

And Almeida has also detected it.

This is how it is explained that before a tweet in which Maroto criticized the lack of capacity to approve Budgets in the capital, the councilor responded: "I will be incapable, but what I will never do is agree on budgets with filoetarras and independentistas like the Government of which it is you minister."
