The climate protection movement has a problem: it has a reputation for becoming more and more radical.

It says that the extreme left is gaining more and more sovereignty, and that activists are increasingly debating violence and sabotage.

Such a crime could already have happened in Frankfurt: in a letter of confession, activists boast of having demolished cars and damaged the glass facade of a car dealership.

The police are still checking whether the letter is authentic.

If that were the case, it would be a fatal sign.

The upcoming evacuation of the protest camp in the Fechenheim forest is now also awaited with concern.

How will the activists fight back when the police clear their tree houses and platforms?

The demonstration in which climate protectors marched through Frankfurt's city center on Saturday to protest against the clearing of the forest in the east of the city presented a completely different picture.

It was a cross-section of society demonstrating, many families with young children were among the protesters.

Loud and creative, but not aggressive, they took their dissatisfaction with the planned motorway expansion to the streets.

Basically it was a very bourgeois protest.

Distance yourself from sabotage and violence

That's why it would be good if the climate protection movement differentiated itself even more clearly from the radicals in its ranks.

That's why it would be important for her to recognize that more can be achieved if she distances herself from sabotage, violence and fantasies of upheaval.

But many others in our society can also contribute to the fact that this happens, first and foremost politics.

Because the frustration of the climate protectors is all too easy to understand.

It has just become known that Germany will once again fail to meet its climate protection goals.

In the transport sector in particular, the country is anything but a model student.

This must neither be ignored nor accepted.

After all, Germany committed itself at the global climate conferences and in its own climate protection law to making its contribution to achieving the 1.5 degree target.

These are not agreements that can be easily flouted.

It is therefore important to strengthen the level-headed forces in the climate protection movement.

Because the climate crisis is not one of the numerous problems of our time, but much more: It is our most important task for the future.
