After the New Year's Eve riots in Berlin, the debate continues as to who the perpetrators are and how effectively action can be taken against them.

According to police chief Barbara Slowik, there are currently 49 cases with 37 accused of attacks on police officers and 53 cases of attacks on firefighters.

The police are working "at full speed" on the investigation by evaluating videos, Slowik said on Monday in the Interior Committee of the House of Representatives.

According to the newspaper "Tagesspiegel" only 38 people have been arrested for attacks on the police and fire brigade;

two thirds of them are German, most under 21 years of age.

The number of 145 arrested, including 100 foreigners, came about because all persons who are suspected of having committed criminal offenses are included in it.

The criminal offenses included offenses such as arson, violations of the explosives law or breach of the peace.

The Berlin police did not confirm the information.

In order to prevent such acts in the future, the quick sentencing of the perpetrators is required, among other things.

However, Berlin's senior public prosecutor Jörg Raupach assumes that the investigation into the riots will take months.

Evaluating video recordings is “meticulous work”.

It won't be over in a week or two.

"We're talking more about months," said Raupach of the "Berliner Zeitung".

There are currently 281 investigations into New Year's Eve.

Police chief Slowik said that of the 47 injured police officers, 14 were treated on an outpatient basis and five had left the service.

A police officer was particularly badly injured, under whose helmet a banger exploded.
