United Nations: Russia's attack on Ukraine unleashed the largest refugee movement since World War I

The United Nations refugee agency estimates that Russia's attack on Ukraine triggered the largest refugee movement since World War II.

The agency said in a statement issued today, Sunday, that the volume and speed of the refugee movement is unparalleled in the history of asylum and displacement since World War II.

"More than 7.9 million people have fled the country, and another 5.9 million people have been displaced within Ukraine," said the agency's representative in Germany, Katharina Lump.

It is noteworthy that the number of external refugees and internally displaced persons, amounting to about 14 million people, is mathematically equivalent to more than a third of the total population of Ukraine, which is approximately 41 million people.
