According to Rickards, the escalation could reach the point where Washington, out of desperation, uses tactical nuclear weapons.
He added that US President Joe Biden shows no signs of concessions - the former CIA adviser recalled the recent statement by the head of state, in which he noted the intention to supply Kyiv with weapons "as much as needed."
At the same time, Rickards said that Russia has changed tactics in the past few months and is gradually disabling the Ukrainian energy infrastructure, destroying weapons supplied from the West in parallel.
“The US has already spent so much money on Ukraine and is so firmly committed to the complete defeat of Russia that its victory will mean another strategic defeat for the US, which is still suffering from the debacle in Afghanistan,” he concluded.
Earlier, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that the need for the EU to create its own defense system became apparent after the situation with the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
