China News Service, January 7th reported that on the 7th local time, after 15 rounds of voting, Kevin McCarthy, the Republican leader of the US House of Representatives, finally won enough votes to be elected Speaker of the US House of Representatives.

He was sworn in on the same day, as were other members of Congress, and the U.S. House of Representatives finally "opened."

Who is McCarthy?

McCarthy was born in a civilian family, his grandfather was a rancher and his father was a fireman.

According to the "Republican Leader" website, at the age of 21, McCarthy had started a small business, but then realized that the profit was meager and the working hours were long, so he sold the business and completed his studies at Cal State University Bakersfield.

During college, McCarthy began working for members of Congress, and then gradually embarked on the road to politics.

He became a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006, served as the majority whip of the House of Representatives since 2011, and rose to the position of majority leader in 2014.

The British "Independent" stated that this year's election is not the first time McCarthy has run for the position of speaker of the House of Representatives. In 2015, after the resignation of the Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner, McCarthy participated in the election, but then announced his withdrawal.

McCarthy, the California congressman, once allied with former President Trump and won the trust of some on the far right of the Republican Party.

However, the "New York Times" broke the news in April last year that after the riots on Capitol Hill, McCarthy had stated that he would push Trump to resign, accusing Trump of "inciting" the people to attack the Capitol.

Although McCarthy later turned to defend Trump, his repeated attitude made the outside world feel "difficult to trust", and McCarthy was therefore accused of being a "political chameleon".

In this election, McCarthy was opposed by some members of the same party because he advocated "not conservative enough" and "not tough enough" in the battle with the Democratic Party.

In his AFP profile, McCarthy never chaired a House committee and lacked major legislative accomplishments during his tenure in Congress.

Agence France-Presse pointed out that McCarthy seems to be good at managing interpersonal networks.

Compromise for votes, the future of American politics is worrying?

After winning the election, McCarthy joked, "It's easy, isn't it?" The election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives dragged on to the fifth day.

From January 6 to 7, 2023, the 15th round of voting for the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives will be held. The picture shows Republican Congressman McCarthy waving after voting for himself.

McCarthy finally won 216 votes in the 15th round of voting, more than half of the votes, and was elected speaker.

Representative Jeffries, nominated by the Democrats, won 212 votes and became the first black congressman to lead a political party in Congress. At the same time, he was also the first Democratic leader of the House of Representatives born after World War II.

The US Consumer News and Business Channel (CNBC) stated that after a series of dramatic votes, the result finally ended the "painful intra-party struggle" of Republicans for four days.

In order to win votes, McCarthy made quite a few compromises. Senate Democratic leader Schumer warned that McCarthy's concessions "will lead to a government shutdown or default, with devastating consequences for our country."

In his view, "Speaker Kevin McCarthy's dream job could turn into a nightmare for the American people."
