The town of Bachmut has been under heavy shelling since the Russian invasion war intensified in the region in August.

The city has an important role for Russia regarding its control over the Donbas region, and has become a battleground.

Recently, shelling between Russian and Ukrainian forces has escalated.

According to Ukrainian authorities in the region, over 60 percent of Bachmut has been destroyed.

Now the satellite company Maxar shows images of what the area looked like before the fighting broke out - and the devastation afterwards.

What used to be green fields have turned to ash, buildings have been blown away, infrastructure has been completely destroyed.

On Friday, Russia declared a unilateral ceasefire along the entire front in Ukraine.

Shortly afterwards, there were reports that new fighting had broken out in the city.

According to AFP's journalists on the spot, shelling from both Ukrainian and Russian forces took place during the morning, Swedish time.
