“The detention of Marat Kasem is an outrageous fact,” she told reporters at a rally in support of Kasem in Moscow.

According to her, the journalists "immediately reached out" to the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, which she represents.

“And of course, we immediately took this case under control,” the deputy said.

Butina added that it is now very important for Kasem that his rights are defended by a professional lawyer.

"Luckily for him, it's now granted," she said.

The MP also added that the authorities of the Baltic countries now do not adhere to any international standards.

“It is now very important for Marat to know that he is supported in his homeland,” she said.

Earlier it became known that the protesters at the Latvian embassy in Moscow demanded that Latvia release the editor-in-chief of Sputnik Lithuania Kasem.

On January 5, it became known that Marat Kasem was detained by the Latvian special services in Riga.

Dmitry Kiselyov, director general of the Rossiya Segodnya media group, said that the detention of Kasem is the revenge of the Latvian authorities.
