On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine.

Karolina, age 12, was at her grandmother's house in Volodymyr in western Ukraine and heard the news on the clock radio in the kitchen.

- Every morning I usually listen to music on the radio, but this morning the news was on that Putin had started a war, she says in SVT's new documentary "I had to flee".

Together with her family, she came to Malmö via Poland.

Best friend left in Ukraine

Her best friend Marta remains in Ukraine.

Every day she connects to talk to Marta via Facetime.

- We meet every day and talk about what we have done and what our plans are.

But it makes me sad that she is still in Ukraine, it hurts to talk about her, she says.

Dreaming of coming home

Even though Karolina is enjoying herself in Malmö, there is no talk of what the future looks like if she gets to decide for herself.

- My dream is to come back to Ukraine.

I miss everything: my city, my family, my friends, she says.

She envisions coming home to her best friend Marta and surprising her.

- I think the day I come back to Ukraine will be the best day of my life, she says.
