The firefighters were called at 12:40 p.m., Quai Alfred-de-Vial, in Bassens, near Bordeaux, by witnesses to an unusual road accident.
A cyclist was killed in a collision with a tractor pulling a trailer of hay.
The 35-year-old cyclist was crushed and died almost instantly, according to firefighters, but the exact circumstances of the tragedy are still unknown at this stage.
Shocked, the 65-year-old tractor driver was evacuated in a minor condition to Charles Perrens Hospital.
Traffic was halted in both directions during the operation.
