In Ecuador, a citizen is facing backlash from LGBTQ groups after changing his gender to a woman in a custody battle.

According to the Ecuadorian daily newspaper El Uni Verso and Elco Mercio on the 4th (local time), Rene Salinas Ramo (47), who lives in Cuenca, Asuaju, southern Ecuador, changed her legal gender from male to female last week. changed to

As the 'father' of her two daughters, he said in an interview with local media and others about the background of this decision, "It has nothing to do with sexual orientation, but only because he wanted to set a legal precedent in the custody dispute."

In Ecuador, in the case of custody, it is said that the birth mother has priority, except for very few cases, such as whether a crime has been committed.

The same is the case with Ms. Salinas, who says he only sees her two daughters very occasionally.

He emphasized that the legal system forces women to become 'mothers', saying, "In the system related to childrearing, they stigmatize women just because they are male and deprive them of their right to be parents."

"It's a dispute with the authorities that care should be left in the hands of women," said Salinas.

He then added that gender reassignment was "a decision that had nothing to do with (my) sexual orientation."

As this fact became known, the Ecuadorian LGBTIQ group felt that it was a somewhat incomprehensible situation.

In a statement, one group said it was "surprised that someone who was visibly cisgender (a person whose biological sex and gender identity matched) easily passed gender change" and that it had previously caused problems with transgender gender perception in Cuenca. emphasized.

Other groups have criticized the authorities for allowing gender change solely for child custody, saying, "It should be made clear that the regulation on gender reassignment is based on standards of public interest and not for a specific case."
