The Saint-Césaire cemetery in Nîmes was the subject of a hundred thefts during the night of January 1 to 2.

The thieves took away bronze ornaments, including crosses and commemorative plaques.

Ninety-six tombs, in total, were looted.

The thieves were visibly interested in the metals with the idea of reselling them by weight to scrap dealers.

Objects were abandoned in the aisles, without it being known whether the thieves were disturbed or whether they were content to carry out a wild sorting on the spot.

A precedent in another city cemetery

This is the second time in just over two months that similar events have occurred in the Gard prefecture.

On the night of October 26 to 27, 2022, in the Pont-de-Justice cemetery, around fifty ornaments had been stolen from around thirty graves.

This first investigation is still ongoing.
