For 2023, the city of Pantin becomes Pantine.

An action presented by the mayor of the town in his wishes and which arouses the debate.

On Europe 1, the mayor explained why this temporary name change was adopted.

The elected official especially deplores the frustration after many concrete measures have remained in the shadows.

"We are taking concrete measures […] but we are not talking about it!"

Bertrand Kern, mayor of Pantin, symbolically renamed Pantine for the year 2023, explains on Europe 1 the reasons which led him to change the name of his city, a sign for him of the municipality's commitment to equality. women-men.

It is a measure that the PS mayor announced during his vows.

There will be no new city entrance signs or changes in the official letters, only an "e" added to the large giant letters forming the name of the city place de la Pointe, along the canal de l' Ourcq.

“There is a kind of frustration”

It is above all frustration that pushed Bertrand Kern to take this symbolic decision.

“We, the elected officials, are taking concrete action but we feel that it is not taken up, that we do not talk about it,” he laments.

"So by adding this little 'e' to Pantin, I wanted to spark debate, raise awareness, question and I believe that for once, it's successful."

The mayor wants to continue to emphasize that renaming his town Pantine is not an action taken in the fight for gender equality but rather the symbol of the concrete measures taken by the municipality in this area.

“There is a kind of frustration with the fact that we have concrete actions, and there I put a little 'e' after Pantin to say that all year 2023, we will find him so that he can symbolize the new actions that the municipality will carry out and it arouses very positive reactions, but also very negative reactions.

Already many measures taken in Pantin

"For three years, we have been living through a period which is quite difficult for women's rights. We have this sordid count of feminicides between 100 and 150 per year, which is not acceptable", recalls the mayor.

"You have women who are less well paid for equivalent positions than a man. You have women who forbid certain professions, you have women who are not comfortable in the public space."

Thus, Bertrand Kern lists on the antenna of Europe 1 the many measures taken by the municipality, well before the addition of this "e" which makes so much talk: there is for example "a social worker at the Pantin police station who welcomes women victims of violence who come to lodge a complaint", or even the reception "last year of three Afghan dancers who are in residence at the National Dance Center in Pantin, which the City houses and which the City accompanies in a path of social and professional integration".

The mayor also points to a café in a popular area of the city where women can meet in complete safety.

By temporarily renaming his town, Bertrand Kern wants to symbolize the shadow actions taken by elected officials who, according to them, are not highlighted enough.
