The authorities in Sweden announced the launch of the largest wolf hunt on Monday, since the restoration of licensed hunting in 2010.

According to Swedish television station SVT, this year the campaign could result in the killing of 75 wolves.

"Hunting is absolutely necessary to slow down the steady increase in the wolf population," Gunnar Glorsen of the Swedish Hunting Association was quoted as saying.

"The number of wolves is the largest we have in modern times," Glorsen added.

SVT figures indicate that a total of 203 wolves have been killed in official hunts since 2010.

Animal rights activists tried to disrupt the hunting campaign, according to the TV station.

It is noteworthy that there are an estimated 460 wolves living in the wild in Sweden.
