• Brazil Lula starts his government with a harsh attack four years after Bolsonaro

  • Interview Fernando Morais: "Today's Lula is infinitely better than 20 years ago"

King Felipe VI and the new president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, held a meeting on Monday that exceeded expectations and was defined by both parties as "very close and cordial."

"There has been a lot of harmony between the two

," sources from the Spanish delegation told EL MUNDO after the meeting held at the Itamaraty Palace in Brasilia, the headquarters of the Latin American giant's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mauro Vieira, the new Brazilian foreign minister, received the monarch as he got out of the car in which he was taken to Itamaraty.

"We will see each other a lot, I hope," the king told the head of Brazilian diplomacy.

The Spanish side stressed that

"the meeting has lasted longer than expected"

, something that influenced the agenda of the veteran Brazilian president, who this Monday was scheduled to meet consecutively with nine presidents, two vice presidents and two prime ministers, in addition to the king Felipe VI.

After a Sunday of emotions in which he

assumed the presidency of Brazil for the third time

, Lula opened his agenda on Monday by receiving the king, to later thread meetings with the presidents of Bolivia, Argentina, Ecuador, Chile, Portugal, Colombia and Honduras, as well as senior officials from other international delegations.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, and Vice President Yolanda Díaz were also part of the king's visit on the first business day of Lula's government.

Albares held a bilateral meeting with Vieira.

"We talked about Brazil and Spain, Europe and Latin America," Lula said on his Twitter account.

The Brazilian Foreign Ministry told EL MUNDO that

Lula and Felipe VI "reviewed the set of issues on the bilateral agenda"

, although "without going into much detail, something that concerns the president of the government."

"We understand that in Moncloa they are already thinking about dates for Pedro Sánchez to come," added the Itamaraty Palace, which hosted Lula's reception on Sunday for foreign delegations after assuming the presidency.

"My best wishes for this new stage full of hope for Brazil," Sánchez wrote this Monday on his Twitter account.

"Together for a social justice agenda"

, added the president of the government.

King Felipe VI had not attended the inauguration of Jair Bolsonaro four years ago, nor did he have the opportunity to meet with him at the end of his term, as he usually does in his visits for transmissions of command: the former Brazilian head of state he left the country two days before the end of his term so as not to hand over the presidential sash to his successor.
