Record employment in Germany: In 2022, around 45.6 million people were employed on average over the year.

That was more than ever since German unification in 1990, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Monday in Wiesbaden.

According to preliminary calculations by the Federal Office, the annual average number of people in employment increased significantly by 589,000 people (1.3 percent) compared to the previous year.

The previous high from 2019 (45.3 million people) was exceeded by 292,000 (0.6 percent).

decline in the Corona period

In 2020, the Corona crisis ended the 14-year increase in the number of people in employment and led to a decline of 362,000 (0.8 percent).

In 2021, employment had increased only slightly by 65,000 people (0.1 percent).

One reason for the increase in employment last year was the immigration of foreign workers, explained the Federal Office.

Added to this was a higher number of employed persons among the domestic population.

According to the information, these two factors outweighed the dampening effects of demographic change on the labor market, which is expected to lead to a significant decline in the working-age population.
